What is an abstract expressionism

It is an abstract art style which was created and developed in New York during 1940s and 1950s by Jackson Pollock, Willem De Kooning and some other prominent American painters. This abstract movement is further bifurcated into two styles of making, one is the Action Painting and the other one is the Color Field Painting. Both of these styles can be identified by spontaneous and gestural movements of brushes by the artist on the canvas to release the psychological or emotional strain.
