Ashok Mullick is one of the most celebrated contemporary artists in India. He likes to portray the contemporary times, especially the modern busy people who have lost all the human contacts and have become robotic. He also focuses on the broken relationships and the situations where people give importance to money over relationships.

The renowned painter attended the Bengal School of Art and has been recognized as a leading painter by the institute. He has the passion for art since his early childhood. It is a rare instance that Mullick as a painter is able to associate the sense of humor with the current situations. Most of his paintings are very loud and vocal about the social issues. It focuses the journey of an ordinary man and different faces of the society.

Education & Work

Bengal School of Art is the institute where Ashok Mullick has taken his formal art trainings. He was graduated with first class distinction from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, in Calcutta at the year 1981. He was a great student during his college days and was awarded with Cultural Scholarship by Department of Culture, Government of India in the year 1981-82.      

Painter Ashok Mullick was trained and practiced at the Fine Arts Government College in Kolkata. His paintings are highly inspired and influenced from the works of painters like Gaganendranath Tagore. Art critics can see the influence of German Expressionism which is connects art to life. The effects in his paintings are been created intentionally and he wants that the art lovers should become the part of great visual experience. Ashok Mullick has mostly preferred working in oil on canvas. It is one of the mediums which help him to connect and bridge the gap between art and modern life. Though, he prefers portraying modern life in surrealistic ways.

Along with several group shows, Mullick has exhibited his solo creations which are been displayed at Aakriti Art Gallery, kolkata; Gallery Nvya, New Delhi; Maximasia- Jakarta, Indonesia; Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai; Galerie 88, Kolkata and many more.

Group shows are fascinating for Ashok Mullick and he prefers to be standout in the crowd. Some of his group shows are ‘Art of Drawing’ curated by Shuvaprasanna Bhattacharya at Gallery Art & Soul, Mumbai; ‘Freedom’, Galerie La Mere, Kolkata; ‘Evam’, presented by The Company Theatre at Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai; ‘Vote Tumikar’, ‘Indian Surrealism’ curated by Prof. SovamSom at Aakriti Art Gallery, Kolkata; ‘Digressing Domains’ curated by Sushma K Bahl presented at Nitanjali Art Gallery, New Delhi; ‘Unayan’, Nvya Art Gallery, New Delhi besides shows abroad in New York, France, Singapore, Dubai, Malaysia, Dhaka, Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, Stuttgart, and Sweden.

Ashok Mullick has participated in different art camps and workshops. These have held in various places inside India and also abroad. Mr. Mullick has visited countries like Bangladesh and Thailand. Several of his works are part of several individual and Institutional collections in India and abroad. Ashok Mullick lives and works out of Kolkata.

Awards and Accolades

He was awarded the Cultural Scholarship by Department of Culture, Government of India during 1981-82.
