Ramkinkar Baij

About

Indian sculptor and distinguished painter Ramkinkar Baij has immensely contributed to the Indian art platform. He was born in the year 1906 on 26th May and breathed his last on 2nd August 1980. Ramkinkar belonged to an economically shy family and hailed from the Bankura district of West Bengal. He was a Bengali and his surname was a distorted derivation of the original title ‘Boidda’/’Boijo’. In 1925 he abandoned his family surname of ‘Poramanik’.

During his teenage years, Baij began to paint portraits of Indian freedom fighters. This was his way of depicting support for the Non-Cooperation Movement against the British rulers of India. His works paved way for the discovery of his talent by distinguished journalist Ramananda Chatterjee.

Most of Baij’sartistic geniuses were inspired by the lifestyles of rural Dalit and Santhal communities who dwelled in Santiniketan.

Awards and Accolades

In the year 1979, he attained the ‘Doctor of Letters Award’ from Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan. 1977 saw his as the winner of ‘Deshi Uttam Award’; this was also bestowed upon him by ViswaBharti, Santiniketan. In the year 1970, he was honored with the Civilian award Padma Bhushan by the Government of India
