Surrealism was the art movement that was instigated by small group of renowned writers and artists in Paris, from where it spread across to Europe. It has been considered as one of the most influential schools or panachesof avant-garde art. The name surrealism was basically derived from axiom Drame surrealiste, which was the sub-title of the play that was written by the renowned writer and art critic Guillaume Apollinaire.

Surrealism evolved out of the pessimistic anti-art movement, which is Dada, most of whose supporters later on became surrealists. However, this movement was less explicitly political and supported a more optimistic philosophy.

In the beginning, the prime focus of the movement was literature but with time it quickly extended to cover painting, sculpture and various other forms of contemporary visual art forms. Surrealist artists actually anticipated to come up with an entirely new range of artistic representations simply by unlocking the ground-breaking power of imagination of the unconscious mind.

Perhaps, all sorts of techniques and phenomena were employed to realize this subliminal vision, comprising dreams, hallucinations, and automatic or arbitrary image generation - principally anything that skirted the customary coherent thought processes were used in creation of this artwork. This coherent approach (reflecting outmoded or archaic conformist values) was precluded by surrealist theorists as basic allybigoted, deceptive and highly restraining.

Not surprisingly, in its endeavor to createpure form of artworkby conformist rationalism, Surrealism was accountable for a host of extremely ground-breaking but often inexplicable, and occasionally indecipherable compositions. However, regardless of its absurdist attributes, this form of art was and still expected continue to be highly alluring art both to artists and general public. Indeed, with its influence on modern art, Surrealism has been able toestablish itself as one of the latest Indian art works of the 21st century.
